Presentation of the rural commune of Raabs an der Thaya

The town is situated on the confluence of the German and the Moravian Thaya in the northern Waldviertel in Lower Austria. Raabs belongs to the district of Waidhofen an der Thaya and is not far away from the Czech border. The rural commune consists of 33 villages and the town itself. It has an area of about 134,66 km².

Raabs an der Thaya is situated 420 metres above sea level. There are five rectories, three kinder gartens, three primary schools, one secondary modern school, one music school and two museums.

Raabs has about 4249 inhabitants.

Mag. Rudolf Mayer has been the mayor of Raabs since September 8th, 2004, and Leo Witzmann has been the vice mayor since March 29th, 2005.

Raabs has two twin towns, the city of Jemnice in the Czech Republic has been a twin town of Raabs since October 2nd, 1999 and Reszel in Poland since July 11th, 2002.

The rural commune offers several sights for tourists.

The Castle of Raabs

In the 11th century this historically very important sight was built on a big rock.

The Ruin of Kollmitz

It is one of the biggest ruins of Austria. The ruin is situated on a rock next to the Thaya. During summer the buffet is open daily.

Museums

The rural commune of Raabs has two museums. The Borderland Museum in Raabs shows excavations of former times. Due to construction the museum is closed from January 1st, 2006 till August 31st, 2006.

The Village Museum of Weikertschlag has been located in the former town hall since 1994. There you can see things our ancestors used in their daily lives.

Culture

All year round several classical concerts, jazz concerts, summer night concerts, poetry readings and also the rape flower festival take place in Raabs.

Sports and free time

In Raabs there are many possibilities to spend your free time. One attraction is the indoor swimming pool, but you can also go swimming in the river. The leisure centre offers tennis courts, a beach volleyball court, a sauna, a boat hire and also a water slide especially made for children.

The beautiful surroundings of the Thaya are perfect for fishing and horseback riding. An adventure trip in a canoe is an absolute must.

From May to September our visitors can enjoy leaded hiking tours, city tours and Nordic-walking. Interesting activities for children are farm visits, fishing, a visit at the Ruin of Kollmitz and adventures in the indoor swimming pool.
